अल्पकालीन सीमांत लागत वक्र यू "U आकार का इसलिए होता है , कि यह उत्पादन प्रतिफल की तीनों अवस्थाओं को बताता है ।

उत्पादन की प्रारंभिक अवस्था में उत्पत्ति की अन्य साधनों को स्थिर रखकर एक साधन की मात्रा को बढ़ाया जाता है , तो उत्पादन बढ़ती हुई दर से प्राप्त होता है । अर्थात सीमांत लागत घटती क्योंकि प्रारंभ में श्रम, तकनीकी , विपणन एवं प्रबंधकीय बचते प्राप्त होती है । एवं एक बिंदु पर सीमांत लागत न्यूनतम हो जाता है , उसके बाद ऊपर उठने लगता है । अर्थात प्रति इकाई सीमांत लागत बढ़ने लगती है जिसके कारण सीमांत लागत यू "U" आकार का हो जाता है।
