अवसर लागत इस बात पर आधारित है की उत्पत्ति के साधन सीमित है और उनके कई विकल्प प्रयोग हो सकते हैं अतः इन सीमित साधनों को सभी प्रयोगों में पूर्ण रूप से प्रयुक्त नहीं किया जा सकता अतः जब एक साधन को किसी एक उद्देश्य के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है तब अन्य उद्देश्य में प्रयोग मैं लेने के अवसर का त्याग करना पड़ता है यही अवसर लागत है।

According to Professor Calle:- "The value of renouncing an option opportunity by selecting an action is the option cost or opportunity cost of the particular task."
Opportunity cost is based on the fact that the means of production are limited and they can have many alternative uses, so these limited resources cannot be fully used in all the experiments. Then the opportunity to be used for other purpose has to be sacrificed. This is the opportunity cost.
