मुद्रा का उद्भव कैसे और कब हुआ इसे खोज पाना असंभव और दुष्कर कार्य मात्र इतना अवश्य कहा जा सकता है कि मानव सभ्यता के मूलभूत तत्वों की तरह मुद्रा भी एक अत्यधिक प्राचीन तत्व है। मानव सभ्यता के क्रमिक विकास के साथ-साथ मुद्रा का भी क्रमिक विकास होता चला आ रहा है।
मुद्रा का प्रयोग उस काल से भी होता था जिसके लिखित प्रमाण आज उपलब्ध नहीं है किंतु एक बात अधिकृत रूप से कही जा सकती है कि पृथक पृथक सभ्यताओं के काल में मुद्रा का विकास भी पृथक पृथक रूप में हुआ है। यदि ऐतिहासिक दृष्टिकोण से हम विचार करें तो यह कह सकते हैं कि मानव के आर्थिक जीवन के विकास के साथ-साथ ही मुद्रा का भी क्रमिक विकास हुआ है ।
इतिहास में उपलब्ध प्रमाण बताते हैं कि प्राचीन काल में दक्षिण महासागर के क्षेत्र में स्थित टापू पर पत्थर की मुद्राओं का चलन था । ऋग्वेद काल में मुद्रा के रूप में गाय का प्रयोग किया जाता था । कुछ इतिहासकारों का मानना है कि सिक्कों का सर्वप्रथम प्रयोग लीडिया ( Lydia ) में ईसा से 6000-700 वर्ष पूर्व हुआ था ऐतिहासिक दृष्टिकोण से मुद्रा के विकास क्रम को निम्नानुसार रखा जा सकता है ।
