भुगतान संतुलन का महत्व निम्नलिखित है -
1. अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आर्थिक स्थिति की जानकारी - भुगतान संतुलन के आधार पर किसी भी देश की आर्थिक स्थिति का अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है है कि वह देश आर्थिक रूप से किस स्थिति में हैं भुगतान संतुलन के अनुकूल होने पर उस देश की आर्थिक स्थिति को अच्छा माना जाएगा जबकि प्रतिकूल होने पर खराब।
2. विदेशी व्यापार की प्रवृत्ति का ज्ञान - भुगतान संतुलन में व्यापार संतुलन का बड़ा हिस्सा होता है जिससे किसी भी राष्ट्र की व्यापारी प्रवृत्ति की जानकारी प्राप्त होती है कि वह देश कितने आयात एवं निर्यात करता है तथा उसका व्यापार संतुलन कैसा है।
3. विदेशी ऋण एवं भुगतान की स्थिति की जानकारी - भुगतान संतुलन से किसी राष्ट्र के विदेशी ऋणों एवं उसके भुगतान ओं की स्थिति का पता लगाया जा सकता है।
4. विदेशी विनिमय कोष की स्थिति का ज्ञान - भुगतान संतुलन के आधार पर किसी देश के विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार की स्थिति का भी पता चलता है जिस राष्ट्र का विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार बड़ा होता है वह राष्ट्रीय आर्थिक रूप से सक्षम माना जाता है।
5. राष्ट्रीय आय पर प्रभाव - एक राष्ट्र की भुगतान संतुलन की स्थिति उस देश के राष्ट्रीय आय पर उसका स्पष्ट प्रभाव देखा जा सकता है।
6. विभिन्न मुद्राओं में देश के भुगतान शेष की स्थिति का ज्ञान -एक राष्ट्र दुनिया के विभिन्न राष्ट्रों से भिन्न प्रकार के लेन-देन करता है जिससे उस राष्ट्र का विभिन्न देशों की मुद्राओं में लेनदेन एवं विनिमय दर का पता चलता है।
7. बैरोमीटर - भुगतान संतुलन को अर्थशास्त्री किसी भी राष्ट्र की आर्थिक स्थिति को मापने का बैरोमीटर के रूप में उपयोग करते हैं।
